BOOK BLOGGER HOP- PLOT VS. CHARACTERS

If you're looking for a place to connect with other book bloggers and share your love of reading and blogging, come join the book party hosted by Jennifer at Crazy for Books.

This week's question, submitted by Alex from Geek on the Brink is:

"What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?"

Hands down, my answer is the characters. If I'm drawn in by well-developed, emotionally compelling characters, I don't mind if the plot is a bit slow, or if there isn't a whole lot of plot for that matter. (As long as the storyline isn't ridiculous.) But a book can have an intricate, page-turning plot and be a complete bore for me if the characters are cardboard cutouts.

Where do you weigh in on the plot vs. character question?

  3. HI new follower here, my fave is the sarcastic character that and a normal heroine - not model type I can relate too but a good plot does help too. So I think a good mixture is the best.

  5. Hopping back to you :) I agree, characters will make or break a book for me. The books that stick in my mind the most are the ones with good characters.

  6. I had such a hard time with today's question. I don't think you can have one without the other. But, I agree that characters are what usually keep me reading and why I invest my time in the book.

  7. I agree with you about characters, but right now I'm reading a book where I like the plot but not so much the characters... Granted, the characters are well developed I just don't like their ideology so.. perhaps not a good example heh~~

And med school -> residency -> novelist?! That's a bizarre career path if there ever was one~~ Not that it's a bad thing, just commenting on it's non-traditionalness ^.^

  10. What a great question. I will say, I prefer a book with a fast moving plot. I can put up with some pretty unlikeable, foolish or even cardboard characters if the story is moving along at a steady clip. Which is not to say that I enjoy ridiculously bad characters! Just to say, that a well-developed plot counts for a lot with me.

  14. I've read a lot of classics with dispicable characters. Sure, they aren't my favorites. But i read them without skimming, and reread them too.
